Doncic is an extremely interesting prospect, while he has all the tools to be a star and has done everything possible production wise for his age, he can still be difficult to project. He has good size (6’8” 228 lbs) for his age and will only get stronger with NBA level training. His size allows him to play multiple positions, but he tends to be at his best when playing as a PG. His is a solid athlete, he has room to grow, but shows a quick 1st step and passable verticality. Doncic’s strongest traits are his feel for the game and passing instincts. At age 18 he is remarkable at reading the floor and finding the open man (4.5 asts per game in 2017-18). He is an extremely competitive player who has won wherever he’s gone and his Euro League production for a player his age (18) has never been done before.
With that being said, Doncic has a number of areas that could cap his ceiling. While he will improve as an athlete, he’s never going to have elite level quickness/explosiveness. Currently he struggles to create separation from more athletic defenders and lacks the lateral quickness to defend at a high level. His defensive motor/discipline could use improvement as he tends to get lost on ball screens and is slow to react. Offensively he needs to improve his 3pt shooting (career 33.5%) if he wants to become more versatile and he’ll need to become more efficient in his shot selection. He tends to have a green light for Real Madrid and settles for tough shots after failing to get by his man. Expanding offensively in the post would help him take advantage of his size more often. Overall, Doncic is a special talent who projects to be a starter to all-star caliber player who could be the top scorer on a playoff team, but may be best as your 2nd or 3rd scoring option.
